The Rum Diary Trailer Hits the Web!

Damn, yes! Check out the new and just released trailer for The Rum Diary, which I hope will find its way into your – and my – favorite cinemas on October 28, too:

The Rum Diary – Official Trailer

Oh my, this is so much more similar to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas than I imagined! Now I'm even more excited than before. If you still have no idea what this movie is about, let me update you with the official plot from the trailer's YouTube description:

Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, "The Rum Diary" tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen's financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.

Come on guys, just let me see that movie right now!

Looks good in its own right, but something seems to be missing when you put it up against Fear and Loathing.

(Terry Gilliam)

It also strangely seems like Depp does't 'channel' Thompson as well. Maybe because he couldn't go live with him this time?

But still excited and I will wait to see it to pass judgement.

Well, don't forget that Depp's character in that movie isn't quite the same character he plays in F&L - "The Rum Diary" takes place over ten years before Thompson's LSD-fueled trip to Las Vegas. So it shouldn't be a surprise that he's not the same quirky drughead in this movie ;)

It sure looks interesting, but I can't feel the HST spirit... I'm aware that its not the Raol Duke Style and I read the book more than once just for the sake of it, but it looks more like a... dramedy.

I will watch the movie for sure, but it aint gonna be an adaption : /.

Hard feelings, bwaha >_<.

I bet the whole context is a bit more serious too, right? It's still gonna be a lot of fun - I got no doubt about that =)
